At this point, it’s beginning to feel like the release itself is stuck in the endless loop that its gameplay is built around: Deathloop has been delayed until 14th September. The title – originally due out at launch on PlayStation 5 and PC – was slated to release on 21st May, but has been pushed back once again due to ongoing coronavirus complications.
Arkane Lyon admits that it wants to preserve “our team’s ambitions […] while ensuring the health and safety of everyone”. It continues: “We’ll be using the extra time to accomplish our goal: create a fun, stylish, and mind-bending player experience.” Honestly, it’s fair enough really – these are unprecedented times, and there’s no point in rushing the product if you don’t have to.
The studio did go on to apologise for the wait, and hinted that it “can’t wait to show more soon”. Obviously this does weaken the PS5’s release schedule somewhat, but we’re sure it’ll be worth it in the end.

Boooooooooo.
Bethesda games need delays period. I'm surprised they're taking this serious.
Thanks god they delayed that. I have too much games to play till then
I’m not too bothered by the delay, but it does make the release schedule fairly light until the 3rd quarter. Returnal, RE8, and R&C will have to be enough. Pretty sure their dates are all set in stone.
That's fine with me. Gives me all of May to enjoy RE Village.
I assume this means the year of exclusivity / release on Xbox is delayed as well then, which means I won't be playing this for almost 18 months... Oof.
Did not see this coming. Obviously delayed but polished is better than early and broken though.
You've got to start wondering if this is not some ploy by their new owners to ensure that new releases on PS5 are as thin on the ground as Xbox 🤔
They can just delay this game forever, because this virus will never be eradicated.
Still not sure what to think of this game, even with all the PR surrounding it, honestly.
I guess Resi 8 is the only game I’m really too bothered about for the foreseeable then.
Fine by me
May is already crowded enough for me with SMT Nocturne HD Remaster and RE Village
@somnambulance agreed. Even after watching all the trailers and doing a little research, still can’t decide on what it will be like. Or if I’ll give it a go.
Good let them take their time. Would rather have a smooth experience instead of a broken one.
@SegaSaturnSNK It is being made by Arkane Studios, Bethesda is only serving as a publisher here.
@nessisonett Ratchet and Clank for me.
I guess it’s better than an unfinished or unpolished product, however, September a much busier release month...
What he really means is let's delay this game even closer to its xbox release? They say its a year exclusive ps5 game but when did that year of exclusivity start?
Probably means Ghostwire Tokyo will be early 2022, Starfield late 2022, etc.
Year exclusivity stays for Deathloop and Ghostwire Tokyo like it did with FFVII Remake.
All the more room for Biomutant!!
@TheFrenchiestFry I was so excited to play Nocturne again but that price is insane. I guess I could sell my copy of the original but I’ll just wait for a deep sale.
I love how whenever Sammy mentions Xbox there’s an uproar but the exact same people are coming up with conspiracy theories about this being delayed.
Being so close to release, tinfoil hat firmly in place, I can't help but think there's been some external pressure to delay this game to a busier period by Microsoft in order to lessen its impact on the PS platform. If I was Sony, I would force them to delay it until early next year when they need a game to fill a gap.
Got to feel a bit sorry for Sony, they helped fund two unusual games that would probably have never been made otherwise and now Microsoft has bought up both studios, with Zenimax, that have been working closely with them and had access to all their tech and dev kits for a long time. MS really are going for the jugular this gen.
What a sh*tshow of a launch, to delay a game for a large amount of time a month from launch is just messy communication.
So now we are stuck with no good first party titles till June and then have to pray that Deathloop and HFW are ready by the time Q4 rolls round.
To think Deathloop was meant to come out day one for PS5 aswell, terrible communication all round, hope it turns out as good as I expect it to be.
For the best. I was desperately trying to avoid preordering, but the trailers look so good i fear i was going to give in. It is so close to Ratchet, the wait will give it a chance to breath. Wonder if this will lead to Ghostwire Tokyo getting pushed too?
At this point I’m half expecting Ratchet and Clank to get a delay and for us to have two games (Returnal and Resident Evil) this half of the year.. ahhhh.
I think this game should take the time it needs to be safely completed. I am still bummed by the wait.
I might be able to get a PS5 by that point 😂😂😂😂😂
That is a shame. I was looking forward to playing this, but I am worried it might be a bit lost in the shuffle releasing in September when there will no doubt be plenty of bigger games coming out too.
@Matej And Arcane Studios is under the same parent company ZeniMax, which of course is all owned by Microsoft now.
These companies keep bringing up safety and here I’ve been working forced overtime since July of last year............
This news really freaking sucks as my kids were really looking forward to this and their hype got me hyped at the thought of us playing together and now this 🤬.
I don't think there's any conspiracy theory here at all. Coronavirus will have impacted the whole industry hard. I guess this is right around the time they'd be looking to go gold, and they've decided that with extra time they can make the game better.
Disappointing news obviously, but not necessarily a bad thing for the final product!
Sounds good. This will let me play through the Mass Effect games over the summer.
How long till Returnal and Rachet and Clank get delayed....
@Medic_Alert I wouldn't take my offhand speculation too seriously, but to not see how MS benefit from this game and its exclusivity on PS5 being brushed away with the Autumn rush of releases is a bit blinkered.
The game gets a lacklustre release on PS5 and forgotten about then MS get to roll out the red carpet for its gamepass release, with new content most likely, and boast about how much they love and appreciate games like Deathloop. Again, I'm commenting offhand with my first impression.
@TrueAssassin86x they won't, because Playstation studios have smashed it during the pandemic.
September? Ouch that's rough 😅
Hi there fellow gamers.
Like some have mentioned, no one wants another "Cyberpunk 2077" debacle all over again.
Also, people should try and chill a little. Making any kind of quality project takes time. Even more so in the current situation of a pandemic that has halted millions of people around the world.
I mean, this kinda sucks, since I was getting super excited for the May release and now it´s september. That´s long!
But on the bright side of things, and there is always one in every situation in life, now it gives me more time to enjoy Returnal, RE8 and to replay the Mass Effect trilogy, with some new gloss of paint, for the seventh time...... And probably for the eight time as well 😜 Love those games so much.
When the game finally launches, i´ll be there day one, trying to solve this murder puzzle and break the "Deathloop!"
Cheers, stay safe folks and happy gaming to us all
@Loftimus but yet.
https://www.ign.com/articles/returnal-delayed-to-april-2021
@awp69 I was just saying that this game is developed by Arkane (really high chances the technical side of it will be good) rather than by Bethesda (a glorious bugfests at launch).
@render it also delays its debut on Xbox, which is hypothetically a year after release, so it's not a great ploy
I think given everything it's a great time to wait and buy a PS5 next year, at the earliest.
@RaZieLDaNtE well said!!!
Gives me 4 more months to try and get a PS5 😉
@render
By that logic, wouldn't they rush the game out, since the 12 months exclusivity starts by the games release date, meaning it won't be on Xbox until September 2022 now.
@TrueAssassin86x i think ign is the place for you.... Kid.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
@RudeAnimat0r @blinx01 Not necessarily. It causes more damage to Playstation because it was initially named as one of the bigger launch games. Sony has been pushing PS5 based on the strengths of its launch lineup whereas MS have been pushing Xbox based on GP and backwards compatibility and as far as I know haven't mentioned Deathloop at all other than to say that they would be honouring the exclusivity period.
@Loftimus and right from pushsquare.
https://www.pushsquare.com/news/2021/01/sony_delays_returnal_to_30th_april_for_extra_polish
Stay salty fanboy and judging from your post i am probably older then you. You just mad you was wrong.
The Question nobody is asking
Does this mean that Xbox AND PC players will have to wait even longer before the exclusivity period is over before they get to play this!?
@render May is packed anyway & I really would not care if Sony said keep both the games & moved on.
@TrueAssassin86x 1 delay how many has Deathloop had now? plus games getting delayed by a month is a sign it is almost done really.
I usually don't put "promising" and "delayed" in the same sentence
@render
I can see where you're coming from, but the game was 1 month out, it would have been major crunch time, and France has literally entered a third national lockdown.
Schools are closed for 4 weeks, so staff will be working from home with kids to look after and the country's hospitals are overwhelmed.
Sometimes there's a more human and logical reason for a game delay.
Just delay all the games 2022, let 2021 be a year of playing backlog 😃
Actually, this was expected.
Called this when they didn't show the release date at the end of the last State of Play trailer. Bummer, but I guess I will turn to Returnal for my Rogue-lite fix.
God of War has been delayed to 2024 hahahahahahaha
Delays don't always equal a good game...look at cyberpunk. Hopefully this game isn't in any trouble and it just needs a couple months of polish. Still, being released in busy September males it less likely I'll be buying it.
@TrueAssassin86x wrong about what? How many games have sony released during lockdown? Returnal has gone gold. Nothing is getting delayed.
I think this will be day one Game Pass for PC and Xcloud so I'll defiantly be giving it a go. Having worked with large tech companies for many years I can very well see MS taking the foot of the gas with this. While they may not actively be holding it back they will not be pushing resources at it. It would be better for MS if this came out at a busy window. Not only does it dilute the effectiveness of Sony's investment in buying the exclusive rights, it gives MS something for game pass PC to compete with full purchase releases and it could reduce the number of players in the first 12 months giving more weight to the Game Pass console release.
It must be remembered that all three console platforms, with Sony being the leader, spend a lot of cash to keep games of other platforms in an attempt to damage their market share. To think MS will not be thinking how to counter this move with Deathloop is just naïve. MS did not buy Zenimax concerned about current income and cashflow. Tech companies buy loss making companies for billions looking to the long term all the time. Zenimax is already profitable and MS has a long game strategy.
The conspiracy side of me still thinks that all these delays are due to the low ps5 stock and people want to get the most amount of sales so they are delaying things so more people have the console.
@UltimateOtaku91 A Year from DeathLoop's release, meaning it will take even longer for Xbox to get it now.
@OmegaStriver My job sucks and doesn't care about my health so other people's jobs should suck and not care about their health also is the worst possible take. Instead of demanding that others have less demand that you have more.
@zimbogamer That seems less like conspiracy, more like possibility. If Ratchet & Clank gets delayed, I don't care what they state the reason is, I'm going to believe it's b/c Sony can't get enough PS5 stock onto store shelves by June 11th.
I don't game as much as I used to, but to me R&C is the first BIG NAME PS5 next gen exclusive. Not a remaster, dual release or new IP that people are unfamiliar with. R&C are practically Sony mascots. That's the system seller. But they need systems to sell.
I think the user-base for PS5 is too small to make profit. Thanks to scalpers and corona. When they sell it now, they can only sell it with a big discount later
@2cents I would assume so, yeah
@Voltan as I saw someone mention that could leave the door open for possible PC Gamepass deals
Delays are good, mkay
@RBRTMNZ We wear masks, stay 6 feet apart and follow all the rules. Back to work.
Hell I’m happy to be at work, gotta make that money.
@UltimateOtaku91
Year of exclusivity means that exclusitivity lasts for a year after the games release period. You cant play around with delaying games thats not how it works
I think it's possible that at least some of these delays may be bigger studios with a good rep. like Arkane would probably like to see more PS5's in consumers hands before they release their games. Sure to make the sales numbers look better.
@rjejr Yeah if R&C gets delayed i will know for sure that the delay is not due to work being needed. Also I understand that this pandemic has made things tough but a lot of people are actually working twice as hard from home and getting more work done (programmers, lawyers etc) so some delays are a little fishy.
@zimbogamer @dr-gorgo
Agree with both of you, I posted first and read second, that's why my comment mimicked yours.
@zimbogamer My wife has been working from home - book production (not the actual production, overseeing the management: what, when, where, how many etc) - since last March, and the company made more many last year than expected and are trying to publish more books than the plants can produce. Her normal 9-5 week is now 9-6:30 and a handful of hours on the weekend. So I do think games can get done. But games haven't been done by their due date for an entire gen now - Nintendo liked to blame the transition to HD - and Covid is probably just a convenient excuse.
PS5 production. Now that's a legit problem as chips are scarce everywhere. I do think some of that is covid based - you need actual people in actual plants to produce the chips - but games can be made remotely.
This is why the ZeniMax purchase isn't such a huge deal. It'll be 2023 at the earliest before any substantial games get released. Most likely 2024 or 2025.
As for those saying a September release will blunt the game's sold through numbers for Sony...this is a PS5 game. The numbers were always going to be blunted due to lack of consoles. If anything, this helps Sony. More time, more consoles sold. More copies bought. Numbers matter.
Hold up, this brings it up next to Life is Strange. Which i am likely to prioritise. I am interested in deathloop though. Im still surprised over the lack of hype this game seems to be getting
wasnt a big fan of this one... no real loss here.
Sad news, but happy they are being given the time to polish the game and work out all the kinks.
Besides gives me more time to beat older games in my backlog.
